Tammy

Tammy is a comedy about a woman whose life falls apart in a single day. She loses her job at a fast-food restaurant, damages her car, and comes home to find her husband has been unfaithful. With no money and no vehicle, she has few options for getting away. Her grandmother Pearl, who drinks heavily but has a car and cash, wants to see Niagara Falls, so the two set off together. What Tammy had imagined as an escape turns into an unexpected journey alongside a relative she does not particularly want to travel with.

Melissa McCarthy stars as Tammy and co-wrote the screenplay with Ben Falcone, who directed. It was the first film Falcone directed, followed by The Boss, Life of the Party, Superintelligence and Thunder Force. Susan Sarandon plays Pearl, with supporting roles for Kathy Bates, Mark Duplass, Gary Cole and Allison Janney. Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and McCarthy are among the producers.

Made on a budget of 20 million dollars, the film took about 100 million dollars worldwide, a strong return relative to its cost. Audience response was modest: on IMDb it holds 4.9/10 from around 57,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.3/10 from roughly 1,300 votes. A critics' rating of 4.4/10 from 184 reviews places it below even the audience scores, so the film drew little enthusiasm from either group.
