Mariah Mundi is a seventeen-year-old living in Victorian London with his younger brother, Felix, after their parents disappear without explanation. When Felix is abducted, Mariah joins forces with Charity, an enigmatic adventurer, to track him down. The search leads them to the Prince Regent, a grand hotel on a remote island, where they encounter sinister figures and a legendary artefact connected to King Midas — an object said to turn whatever it touches to gold. Mariah must uncover the hotel's secrets to rescue his brother and learn what happened to his parents.
The film is directed by Jonathan Newman, his third feature after Foster and Swinging with the Finkels, both from 2011. Aneurin Barnard plays Mariah, with Michael Sheen as Charity, Sam Neill as the antagonist Otto Luger, and Lena Headey, Ioan Gruffudd and Keeley Hawes among the supporting cast. Matthew Huffman and Christian Taylor wrote the screenplay, and the production was mounted across Belgium, the United Kingdom and Spain with a budget of 25 million dollars.
Released in December 2013, the film drew modest audience scores: 5.7 out of 10 on TMDB from 255 votes, while critics gave it 5 out of 10 across 15 reviews, a similar assessment from both sides.
