Short description
Whiteout is a crime thriller set in Antarctica, where U.S. Marshal Carrie Stetko is the only law enforcement officer on the continent. With the sun about to set and the Amundsen-Scott Research Station preparing to shut down for the polar winter, she plans to leave the harsh environment behind. Those plans change when a body is found out on the open ice, the first homicide recorded on the continent. Working alongside a United Nations representative, Carrie has only a short window to identify the killer before the approaching winter closes the base and makes any further investigation impossible. The case draws her into secrets buried beneath the ice and forces her to confront painful memories from her own past.
Dominic Sena directed the film, the fourth in a run that began with Kalifornia in 1993 and continued through Gone in Sixty Seconds, Swordfish and later Season of the Witch. Kate Beckinsale plays Carrie, with Gabriel Macht as Robert Pryce, Tom Skerritt as Dr. John Fury, and Columbus Short, Shawn Doyle and Alex O'Loughlin among the supporting cast. The screenplay is credited to Carey Hayes, Chad Hayes and Erich Hoeber.
Released in 2009, Whiteout carried a budget of 40 million dollars and returned roughly 18 million worldwide, a result that fell well short of its cost. On IMDb it holds 5.5 out of 10 from about 42,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.6 out of 10 from a much smaller base of 878. A critics' rating of 3.6 out of 10 from 115 reviews sits below both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The project was in the early stages of production as early as 2002. At that time, Reese Witherspoon was attached to the lead role.
- At the very beginning of the film, when Kate Beckinsale’s character enters the station, she takes off her gloves. But when she enters her cabin, the gloves are back on her hands.
- The film is based on the graphic novel "Whiteout" by writer Greg Rucka and artist Steve Lieber.
- The crew of the An-12 aircraft consists of 5 people in its civilian modification: the commander, co-pilot, navigator, flight mechanic, and flight radio operator. However, in the film, the aircraft is operated by only 2 people, as on modern aircraft.
- At the end of the film, when Carrie Stetko enters the doctor's office, her cardigan is unbuttoned. After a scene change at the table, the cardigan is buttoned up again with a couple of buttons.
- The film features a scene of a plane crash in Antarctica: a similar incident occurred with an Il-14M of the Myachkovsky Joint Stock Company.
