Destination Tokyo follows an American submarine crew during the Second World War. Captain Cassidy receives sealed orders that send his boat out of San Francisco Bay on Christmas Eve 1941, first to collect a meteorologist in the Aleutian Islands and then to slip into Tokyo Bay itself. There the men are to gather weather and coastal information needed before the planned air attack on the Japanese capital. The mission depends on passing Japanese patrols and defences undetected, and the long voyage puts the crew's nerves and loyalties under strain.
Delmer Daves directed and co-wrote the film with Albert Maltz, and Jerry Wald produced it for Warner Bros. It was the first feature Daves directed, coming before Dark Passage, Broken Arrow and 3:10 to Yuma. Cary Grant plays Captain Cassidy, heading a cast that includes John Garfield as Wolf, Alan Hale as 'Cookie' Wainwright, John Ridgely as the reserve officer Raymond, Dane Clark as Tin Can and Warner Anderson as Andy.
Made for about two million dollars and taking roughly five million worldwide, the film performed solidly for its time. On IMDb it holds a 7.1 rating from around 6,200 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.9 from a much smaller sample of 72. A critics' rating of 6.4 from six reviews places it slightly below the audience scores.
