Kidnapping Mr. Heineken

In 1983 Amsterdam, a group of friends who have been carrying out robberies decides to attempt a far bigger crime: abducting Alfred "Freddy" Heineken, the heir to the Heineken brewing empire, along with his driver, Ab Doderer. Led by Cor Van Hout and Willem Holleeder, the gang snatches Heineken outside his home, hides him and his driver, and demands a ransom of 35 million Dutch guilders. The plan appears to succeed when the money is handed over, but the kidnappers find themselves under increasing pressure as the net closes around them. The film is based on the real kidnapping that took place in the Netherlands in 1983.

Daniel Alfredson directed, working from a screenplay by William Brookfield. The film follows Alfredson's earlier work on the two Millennium adaptations, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, both released in 2009, and Echoes from the Dead in 2013; Blackway followed in the same year as this film. Anthony Hopkins plays Freddy Heineken, with Jim Sturgess as Cor Van Hout, Sam Worthington as Willem Holleeder, Ryan Kwanten, Mark van Eeuwen and Thomas Cocquerel among the gang. The production was an international co-production involving companies from the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Kingdom and the United States, and it took about 3 million dollars worldwide.
