Short description

Derek Thompson is a minor-league hockey player whose rough style and habit of knocking out opponents' teeth have earned him the nickname "Tooth Fairy." After a thoughtless act shatters a young fan's hopes, he is sentenced to a week of service as an actual tooth fairy, complete with wings, wand and tutu. Supervised by Lily, a senior fairy, Derek stumbles through his new duties before the role begins to reconnect him with the dreams he set aside.

Michael Lembeck directed the film, which followed his work on The Santa Clause 2 and The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause and The Clique; Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure came next in his filmography. The screenplay is by Randi Mayem Singer with Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, and the producers include Mark Ciardi, Gordon Gray and Jason Blum. Dwayne Johnson plays Derek, with Ashley Judd as Carly, Julie Andrews as Lily, Stephen Merchant as Tracy, Ryan Sheckler as Mick Donnelly and Seth MacFarlane as Ziggy. Thirty-nine cast members and 110 crew members are credited.

Released in January 2010, the film runs 101 minutes. Made for about 48 million dollars, it took in roughly 112 million dollars worldwide, a return well above its cost. On TMDB it holds 5.5 out of 10 from over two thousand votes, suggesting a mixed response from viewers.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The screenplay was written for Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1993, but the actor chose to film John McTiernan's 'Last Action Hero' (1993), and this project was shelved.
  • The role in 'Tooth Fairy' marked Billy Crystal's first acting role since the 2002 comedy 'Analyze This'. During that interval, he had only participated in the voice acting for 'Cars' (2006) and the English version of 'Howl's Moving Castle' (2004).
  • The hockey scenes were filmed at the Great Western Forum, an old arena no longer used for sports, featuring players from the Los Angeles Kings.
