Midnight in Paris

Gil, an American screenwriter, travels to Paris with his fiancée Inez and her wealthy parents. A successful but unsatisfied Hollywood professional, he longs for the artistic world of the 1920s and wishes he had lived in that era. Inez has little patience for his nostalgia. One night, walking the streets alone, Gil is picked up at midnight by a vintage car that carries him back to the Paris of the 1920s, where he encounters cultural figures he has long admired, among them Ernest Hemingway, Pablo Picasso, Gertrude Stein and the Fitzgeralds. Each midnight return deepens his sense that he belongs to that time rather than his own, setting up the film's central conflict between the life he is expected to lead and the one he imagines for himself.

Woody Allen directed and wrote the film, the thirty-ninth of the forty-eight features he has directed in chronological order, following You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger and preceding To Rome with Love. Owen Wilson plays Gil, with Rachel McAdams as Inez, Kathy Bates as Gertrude Stein, Adrien Brody as Salvador Dalí, Kurt Fuller and Carla Bruni among the credited cast of forty-three. Shot across Spain, the United States and France, it runs 94 minutes and was made for 17 million dollars, going on to take about 151 million worldwide.
