Son of God recounts the life of Jesus of Nazareth, from his birth through his teachings and crucifixion to his resurrection. In Roman-occupied Judea, heavy taxation and unrest weigh on the Jewish population, and the high priest Caiaphas works to keep his people under control while avoiding the anger of governor Pontius Pilate. That order is unsettled by Jesus, whose miracles and message of love and hope draw crowds and lead many to see him as the Messiah. Fearing a revolt and losing their authority, the religious leaders decide he must die, setting in motion his betrayal, trial and death. The film presents this story as a straightforward account rather than a drama focused on a single episode.
The film is directed by Christopher Spencer, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Nic Young and Richard Bedser. It follows Spencer's Space Race, released in 2005, as the second of the two films he has directed. Portuguese actor Diogo Morgado plays Jesus, with Roma Downey as Mary, Greg Hicks as Pilate, Adrian Schiller as Caiaphas, Darwin Shaw as Peter and Sebastian Knapp as John, among a credited cast of thirty-five.
Released in February 2014, the film is a drama from the United States, produced by 20th Century Fox, TSG Entertainment, LightWorkers Media and Hearst Entertainment Productions. It took about 71 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.9/10, while on TMDB it sits at 6.8/10.
