Ram and Leela fall for each other in a small Indian town, but their families belong to two clans that have been feuding for five centuries. Ram, a carefree charmer from the Rajadi side, and Leela, a spirited young woman from the Sanera household, find their romance caught between the longstanding hostility of their relatives and the violence it keeps producing. The couple must decide how far they are willing to go against the expectations of everyone around them. The film is a Romeo and Juliet-inspired drama set in Gujarat, written by Siddharth Singh, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Garima Wahal, and it features musical sequences woven through the story.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali directed and produced the film with Kishore Lulla. It followed Devdas and Black in his filmography and came before Bajirao Mastani, Padmaavat and Gangubai Kathiawadi. Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone lead the cast as Ram and Leela, with Richa Chadha, Supriya Pathak, Sharad Kelkar and Gulshan Devaiah in supporting roles. The film runs 155 minutes and was released in November 2013. It earned about 32 million dollars worldwide, a strong result for an Indian production of its scale. On TMDB it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from just over two hundred votes, suggesting a modest but appreciative audience.
