In an alternate Tokyo, the city is divided among street gangs known as the Tribes, each controlling its own neighborhood. Mera leads the Wu-Ronz in Bukuro and allies himself with the powerful gangster Buppa, whose backing he intends to use to start a war with the Musashino Saru. During a confrontation, a member of that gang, Tera, is killed, and the death of a man respected across the Tribes turns the other gangs against Mera and Buppa, drawing the whole city toward open conflict.
Sion Sono directed and wrote the film, the thirteenth of nineteen features listed in his filmography, following Venice 70: Future Reloaded and preceding Tag. Ryohei Suzuki plays Mera, with Young Dais as Kai, Ryuta Sato as Tera, Nana Seino as Sunmi, Shota Sometani as MC Show and Denden as High Priest, among a credited cast of thirty-three. The film is based on Santa Inoue's manga, and its mix of action, crime, drama, music and science fiction runs 116 minutes.
Tokyo Tribe was released in 2014 and took about 1 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.4/10 from roughly 3,800 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.5/10 from 164 votes, a narrow gap between the two audience scores.
