Set in Paris, Private Fears in Public Places follows six people whose lives intersect as they search for connection and love, often without success. Thierry, a real estate agent, is struggling to find a suitable apartment for his clients Nicole and Dan, a couple whose relationship is strained. Dan, recently discharged from the army, spends his days drinking in a hotel bar, where he confides in Lionel, the bartender. Lionel cares for his elderly, bad-tempered father, and hires Charlotte, Thierry's colleague, as a home helper. Meanwhile, Thierry's younger sister Gaëlle places personal ads and waits in cafés, hoping to meet someone. The film adapts Alan Ayckbourn's play Private Fears in Public Places, with a screenplay by Ayckbourn and Jean-Michel Ribes.
