Love Is Strange

After nearly four decades together, Ben and George marry in New York shortly after same-sex marriage becomes legal there. Their happiness is short-lived: George teaches music at a Catholic school, and once the diocese learns of the wedding he is dismissed. Without his salary, the couple can no longer keep the Manhattan apartment they have shared, and they must rely on the goodwill of others. George moves in with two gay police officers who live nearby, while Ben takes a room with his nephew's family in Brooklyn, and the arrangement intended as temporary drags on, straining everyone involved.

Ira Sachs directed and wrote the screenplay with Mauricio Zacharias, and produced alongside Lars Knudsen and Jay Van Hoy. The film followed Sachs's Married Life and preceded Little Men, Passages, Peter Hujar's Day and The Man I Love in his filmography. John Lithgow and Alfred Molina play Ben and George, with Marisa Tomei, Darren E. Burrows, Charlie Tahan and Cheyenne Jackson in supporting roles.

Released in 2014, the drama runs 98 minutes. It earned about 2 million dollars worldwide, a modest figure for a production with international backing from companies in the United States, Brazil, Greece and France. Audiences rate it 6.7 out of 10 on IMDb across some 14,000 votes, and 6.3 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller pool of 315. A critics' rating of 7.8 out of 10 from 170 reviews places it clearly above those audience scores.
