Zatoichi, the blind masseur and swordsman, encounters a Chinese drifter named Wang Kang, a one-armed fighter who has rescued a young boy after samurai guards turned an official procession into a massacre. The boy's parents were killed in the attack, and Wang Kang is hunted by those who want the witnesses gone. Zatoichi takes the child under his care before crossing paths with Wang Kang, whose distrust runs deep and who cannot understand Zatoichi's language. The boy alone can speak to both men, but misunderstandings and the scheming of a local boss push the two warriors toward a confrontation neither wants.
The film is a 1971 Japanese-Hong Kong co-production directed by Kimiyoshi Yasuda, working from a screenplay by Yamada Takayuki and Yasuda himself. It is the twenty-second entry in the Zatoichi series and the fifth film Yasuda directed in that franchise; it follows Hsu Tseng-Hung's work elsewhere in his own career. Shintarō Katsu returns as Zatoichi and also produced, with Jimmy Wang Yu as Wang Kang. Yuko Hama, Michie Terada, Kōji Nanbara and Tōru Abe round out the cast.
On IMDb the film holds a 7.1 rating from around 1,900 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.8 from a much smaller pool of 47 votes. The two scores are close, though the larger IMDb sample suggests a steadier and slightly warmer response across the series' followers.
