Suffragette

Suffragette is a historical drama set in Britain in the early twentieth century, following the women who joined the fight for the right to vote. Peaceful protest brought them nothing, so they turned to more radical methods, and the state answered with escalating force. Many of them were working women rather than members of the educated elite, and they risked their jobs, their homes, their children and their lives. At the centre of the story is Maud Watts, a young wife and mother drawn into the movement.

The film was directed by Sarah Gavron, whose earlier feature was Brick Lane, released in 2007, and who went on to make Rocks in 2020. Abi Morgan wrote the screenplay, and Alison Owen and Faye Ward produced. Carey Mulligan plays Maud, with Helena Bonham Carter, Brendan Gleeson, Anne-Marie Duff, Ben Whishaw and Meryl Streep among the cast.

Made on a budget of 14 million US dollars, the film took about 16 million US dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.9 from roughly 46,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.2 from around 1,700 votes. A film critics' rating of 6.8 from 220 reviews places it slightly below the audience scores.
