Terry Griffith is a high school journalism student who is convinced that her teachers and classmates don't take her seriously because she is a girl. When her article is rejected from a local newspaper competition for that reason, she decides to prove her point by enrolling at a rival school disguised as a boy. Her brother, Buddy, helps her change her appearance, alter her voice and copy the way teenage boys behave. The plan works well enough that Terry makes friends among the male students, but the situation becomes complicated when she falls for one of them, Rick.
Just One of the Guys was released in 1985 and was directed by Lisa Gottlieb, her second feature after Murder in a Mist in 1980. The screenplay is by Dennis Feldman and Jeff Franklin, and the cast includes Joyce Hyser as Terry, Clayton Rohner as Rick, Billy Jayne as Buddy and William Zabka as Greg, among 40 credited cast members. The production had a budget of around 12 million dollars and took in roughly the same amount worldwide.
Audience responses were moderate. On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.5 out of 10 from more than 17,000 votes, and on TMDB it stands at 6.4 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 4.8 out of 10 from 14 reviews places it noticeably lower than the audience scores. The story mixes comedy and romance.
