Short description
Yves Saint Laurent is a French-Belgian drama about the designer's rise in the Paris fashion world. In 1957, at just twenty-one, he is already working alongside Christian Dior. When Dior dies unexpectedly, Saint Laurent is handed control of the house and must present a first collection that the haute couture establishment regards with doubt. Its reception turns him into a celebrated name overnight. At a showing he meets Pierre Bergé, and the two become lovers and business partners, going on to found their own couture house within a few years. The relationship and the pressures of the industry both shape Saint Laurent's later life, as his creative drive and his personal difficulties pull against each other.
Jalil Lespert directed, and wrote the screenplay with Jacques Fieschi and Marie-Pierre Huster. It was the first feature Lespert directed, ahead of In the Shadow of Iris, Dakar Chronicles and Dakar: Race Against the Desert. Pierre Niney plays Saint Laurent, with Guillaume Gallienne as Bergé, Nikolai Kinski as Karl Lagerfeld, Charlotte Le Bon, Xavier Lafitte and Laura Smet in supporting roles. The film cost around 12 million dollars and took about 21 million worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds 6.2 out of 10 from roughly 14,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.6 out of 10 from 936 votes. A critics' rating of 5.3 out of 10 from 71 reviews places it below both audience scores.
