Four lifelong friends in a small New England town have kept a shared secret for half a century. As young men, they were involved in the death of a woman they had all desired, and the four now gather regularly to trade ghost stories and dark tales, a pastime that masks what they did. When the son of one of the men dies in a strange accident, the survivors begin to suspect that their old crime has returned to claim them, and that the woman they wronged may not have stayed dead.
The film is a horror drama directed by John Irvin, following his 1980 thriller The Dogs of War in his filmography. Lawrence D. Cohen wrote the screenplay, and Burt Weissbourd produced it for Universal Pictures. Fred Astaire, Melvyn Douglas, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and John Houseman play the four friends, with Craig Wasson appearing in a dual role and Patricia Neal among the credited cast, which numbers thirty-seven, alongside a credited crew of sixty-two.
Released in December 1981, the film runs 110 minutes. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 5.4 from thirty-one reviews, while on TMDB it sits at 6 out of 10 from 178 votes, a modest reception from a small audience sample.
