As the Light Goes Out is a Hong Kong action drama about a fire crew in the Pillar Point district. On Christmas Eve, what looks like a routine call to a small fire at a liquor warehouse turns into a far more serious emergency, because a power station stands next to the building. If the flames reach it, the whole city could be left without electricity. The firefighters must work together and trust one another as the situation spirals beyond their control. The film also follows the crew's senior officer, who is marking his retirement on the same day.
The film was directed by Derek Kwok Chi-Kin, who co-wrote it with Jill Leung Lai-Yin and Philip Yung Chi-Kwong. It is the first of the two features he has directed, ahead of Immortal Demon Slayer in 2017. Nicholas Tse plays the senior station officer, with Shawn Yue, Simon Yam, Hu Jun, Bai Bing and William Chan Wai-Ting among the main cast; 47 performers are credited in total.
Released in January 2014, the film runs 115 minutes and was produced in Hong Kong and China by Media Asia Films, Emperor Motion Pictures and Zhujiang Film Group. Audiences give it a moderate reception: it holds a rating of 6.2 out of 10 on IMDb, from around 1,500 votes, and the same score on TMDB, from a much smaller base of 63 votes.
