In Prohibition-era New York, gangster Dave "The Dude" Conway has a superstition: he believes buying an apple each day from street peddler Apple Annie brings him luck. His right-hand man Joy Boy and the rest of his crew indulge him, but the arrangement is shaken when Annie goes missing from her usual corner. Dave finds her in despair: her daughter Louise, raised in a Spanish convent school and unaware of her mother's real circumstances, is arriving in New York with her aristocratic fiancé and his father. To spare Louise the truth, Annie needs to appear as the wealthy society woman she has claimed to be for years. Dave, with help from his girlfriend Queenie and his associates, sets out to transform the shabby peddler into a convincing lady of means.
Frank Capra directed, produced and co-wrote the film with Hal Kanter and Harry Tugend. It was his tenth narrative feature since American Madness, following It's a Wonderful Life. Glenn Ford plays Dave, Bette Davis plays Apple Annie, and Hope Lange, Arthur O'Connell, Peter Falk and Thomas Mitchell round out the cast, with 113 credited performers overall. Made on a budget of roughly 3 million dollars, it earned about 5 million worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 5.7 out of 10 from 10 reviews. On TMDB, audience reception is warmer, with a rating of 7.3 out of 10 from 189 votes.
