If I Stay

Mia Hall is a seventeen-year-old cellist with a promising future, close to her family, her best friend and her boyfriend Adam, the singer and guitarist of an indie rock band. Her hardest decision seems to be whether to study at Juilliard or to stay near Adam. A car ride with her family changes that in an instant. Mia ends up in a coma, and while her body lies in a hospital, she exists in a state between life and death, aware of what happens around her and faced with a choice about whether to return to a life that will not be what she imagined.

The film adapts Gayle Forman's novel of the same name and was directed by R.J. Cutler, whose feature credits begin with this 2014 release before the documentaries Billie Eilish: The World's a Little Blurry and Elton John: Never Too Late. Shauna Cross wrote the screenplay, and Alison Greenspan produced. Chloë Grace Moretz plays Mia, with Jamie Blackley as Adam, Liana Liberato as Kim, Mireille Enos and Joshua Leonard as her parents, and Stacy Keach as her grandfather.

Made for about eleven million dollars, the film took in roughly seventy-eight million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.7 out of ten across more than 131,000 votes, while on TMDB it averages 7.3 from over 4,000 ratings. A critics' rating of five out of ten from 137 reviews sits below the audience scores.
