Kickboxer 2: The Road Back
Short description
Kickboxer 2: The Road Back continues the story of the Sloan family. David Sloan, brother of the fighters Kurt and Eric, teaches martial arts in Los Angeles and has no wish to compete for money. Financial pressure on the gym his brothers founded forces him into a fight against the champion of a brutal school, run by a promoter named Maciah. David wins, then walks away from the title and speaks out against a scene he sees as corrupt, which brings violent retaliation. Xian Chow, the trainer who once guided Kurt in Thailand, reappears as David is recovering from his injuries.
The film was directed by Albert Pyun and written by David S. Goyer, with Sasha Mitchell as David, Dennis Chan Kwok-San as Xian Chow, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as Sanga, Michel Qissi as Tong Po, Matthias Hues as Neil Vargas and Vincent Klyn as a Thai thug. Released in January 1991, it runs 91 minutes and comes from Kings Road Entertainment. It followed several other Pyun films in quick succession, including Cyborg and Captain America. A later entry in the series, Kickboxer 4: The Aggressor, was also directed by Pyun.
Its reception was modest. On IMDb the rating is 4.6 from around 6,800 votes, and on TMDB it is 5.6 from about 208 votes. A critics' score of 3.5 from five reviews places it below even those audience figures. Worldwide box office came to roughly 1 million dollars, a small return for a theatrical action release of the period.
What's left behind the scenes
- Sasha Mitchell starred in the lead role in the sequel. Jean-Claude Van Damme participated again, but this time only as one of the screenwriters.
- The script had numerous flaws, or rather inconsistencies with the beginning of the story. A major plus was the return of two actors to the film – Dennis Chan and Michel Qissi. In addition, it also featured a popular action movie villain – Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa.
- In the final fight scene, neither Sasha Mitchell nor Michel Qissi even touched the broken glass; instead, prop (rubber) ice was used. And in the scene where one of the heroes puts his hands into a container of broken glass, a prop hand was used.
