Short description
Far from the Madding Crowd is a Victorian-era drama set in the English countryside, where Bathsheba Everdene inherits a farm from her uncle and decides to run it herself. Independent and unwilling to marry unless she chooses to, she draws the attention of three men: Gabriel Oak, a sheep farmer who has fallen on hard times and comes to work for her; William Boldwood, a wealthy neighbouring landowner; and Frank Troy, a sergeant whose arrival unsettles the careful distance she keeps from all of them. The film follows her attempts to manage the farm and her own feelings as the three men pursue her in different ways.
Thomas Vinterberg directed the adaptation, working from a screenplay by David Nicholls, with Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich and Anita Overland producing. It was Vinterberg's fourth feature, arriving between The Hunt and Kursk. Carey Mulligan plays Bathsheba, with Matthias Schoenaerts as Gabriel Oak, Michael Sheen as William Boldwood and Tom Sturridge as Sergeant Francis Troy; Juno Temple and Jessica Barden are among the supporting cast credited alongside them.
The film was released in 2015 and runs just under two hours. Made for around 15 million dollars, it took roughly twice that amount worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.1 from about 57,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7 from a much smaller pool of just over a thousand. A film critics' rating of 7.4 from 192 reviews places it slightly above the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- During the filming of a scene where Carey Mulligan rides a horse, the actress fell and landed directly on her head. Ten minutes later, while filming a different scene, she fell onto her knees. Matthias Schoenaerts initially thought she was simply acting, but then Mulligan collapsed face down. According to Mulligan, she suffered a concussion that plagued her for about six weeks, and because of it, she can't even remember some moments of filming.
- The filmmakers reached an agreement with the army to cease fire in the training area of Lulworth Cove (United Kingdom) during filming.
