Short description
Flor Moreno, a Mexican single mother, moves to the United States with her daughter Cristina to build a better life. She finds work as a housekeeper for the Claskys, a wealthy Los Angeles couple, despite speaking little English. When the job's demands make it hard for Flor to care for Cristina, Deborah Clasky suggests that mother and daughter move into the family home, setting the two households on a collision course.
John Clasky is a celebrated chef and, by most appearances, a devoted husband and father; Deborah is restless and neurotic, and their marriage is strained. Flor's arrival unsettles the household further, as each family's assumptions about parenting, work and family life come into conflict. Communication is halting, and the arrangement forces both sides to reconsider what they value.
James L. Brooks wrote, directed and produced the film, his fifth feature, following Terms of Endearment, Broadcast News and As Good as It Gets. Adam Sandler and Téa Leoni play the Claskys, with Paz Vega as Flor, Cloris Leachman as Deborah's mother Evelyn, and Shelbie Bruce as Cristina. Produced by Columbia Pictures and Gracie Films, it had a budget of 80 million US dollars and took about 55 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.4 out of 10 from roughly 92,000 votes; on TMDB it holds 6.1 from about 1,400. A critics' rating of 6.3 from 166 reviews sits close to the audience scores, suggesting a mixed but not dismissive reception.
What's left behind the scenes
- After test audiences found the film's ending unsatisfactory, two new scenes were shot and added.
- Before the film's release, 13 preview screenings were held to gauge audience reaction.

- Adam Sandler turned down the role of Max in Michael Mann's "Collateral" (2004) in order to participate in this film.
- Since director James L. Brooks did not understand Spanish, and Paz Vega did not understand English, a translator was constantly present on set.
- Over 2000 girls auditioned for the role of Bernice. Sarah Steele, who was chosen, had to gain over 6 kilograms to better fit the character.
- Although it didn't make the final cut of the film, deleted scenes on the DVD show that Flor and Christina arrived in the US on a small plane piloted by a friend of Flor's ex-husband, who attempted to flirt with her during the flight.
- The film's scenes were shot in the same order as they appeared in the script.
- Anne Bancroft was originally cast as Deborah's mother, but was forced to withdraw from the project at the last moment.
