Phoenix

Phoenix is a German drama set in the months after the Second World War. Nelly Lenz, a Jewish cabaret singer, has survived the Holocaust but returns to Berlin with her face badly disfigured. After reconstructive surgery gives her a new appearance, she sets out to find Johnny, her non-Jewish husband, while her friend Lene Winter, who works for the Jewish Agency, urges her to leave for Palestine instead. When Nelly finds Johnny, he does not recognise her, yet he notices a resemblance to the wife he believes dead and proposes that she pose as his late wife so that he can claim her family's inheritance. Nelly agrees, partly to learn whether he betrayed her. The film follows her as she takes on the identity of her own double, and as the arrangement between them grows more complicated.

Christian Petzold directed and wrote the screenplay; the producers were Florian Koerner von Gustorf and Michael Weber. Nina Hoss plays Nelly, Ronald Zehrfeld plays Johnny, and Nina Kunzendorf plays Lene Winter, among a credited cast of twenty-six. Phoenix is the fifth of the nine features Petzold has directed, arriving between Barbara and Transit. It was released in September 2014 and runs 98 minutes.

On IMDb, Phoenix holds a critics' rating of 8.2 out of 10 from 132 reviews, while on TMDB it has a rating of 6.8 out of 10 from 508 votes. The film's worldwide box office was about 6 million US dollars.
