Sanjay Mehra is a scientist convinced that intelligent life exists beyond Earth, and he builds a computer capable of sending signals into space. His colleagues dismiss his claims, and shortly after his equipment makes contact, he dies in a car accident that also leaves his pregnant wife Sonia injured. Their son Rohit grows up with an intellectual disability as a result of the crash, cared for by his protective mother and mocked by others his own age. His closest friend is Nisha, whose kindness draws her to him. When Rohit comes across his late father's old computer and asks Nisha to help him use it, the machine responds with images and patterns from somewhere far away, setting off events the two of them could not have anticipated.
Koi... Mil Gaya was directed by Rakesh Roshan, who also wrote the screenplay with Sachin Bhowmick and Robin Bhatt and produced the film through Film Kraft with Yash Raj Films. Hrithik Roshan plays Rohit, with Preity Zinta as Nisha, Rekha as Sonia, and Indravardhan Purohit as Jadoo, among a credited cast of twenty-two. Made for about 4 million USD, it took roughly 10 million USD worldwide, a strong return on its budget for an Indian science fiction release of that period.
The film is the first entry in the series Rakesh Roshan continued with Krrish and Krrish 3. On TMDB it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from around 280 votes.
