Nick, a young surfer, travels to Colombia to visit his brother. He falls in love with a local woman named Maria, and the two are happy together until she introduces him to her uncle, Pablo Escobar. The drug lord, played by Benicio del Toro, runs a criminal empire built on cocaine, and the relationship draws Nick into the violent world of the family business, putting his life at risk. The film is a romantic thriller set against the contrast between Colombia's beaches and the danger surrounding Escobar.
Andrea Di Stefano wrote the screenplay and directed Escobar: Paradise Lost, which was his first feature as director and was followed by The Informer, Last Night of Amore and My Tennis Maestro. The cast also includes Josh Hutcherson as Nick, Brady Corbet as Dylan, Claudia Traisac as Maria, Carlos Bardem as Drago and Ana Girardot as Anne. Produced by Nadia Khamlichi, Adrian Politowski and Dimitri Rassam for companies including Orange Studio, Pathé, uMedia and Chapter 2, the film had a budget of 17 million dollars and grossed 6 million dollars worldwide.
Audience reception was moderate: on IMDb the film holds 6.5 out of 10 from around 24,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.3 out of 10 from 831 votes. A critics' rating of 5.5 out of 10 from 55 reviews places it slightly below the audience scores.
