Hope

Hope is a Korean drama about a young girl named So-won and the aftermath of a violent assault she survives. One rainy morning she sets out for a school near her home, and hours later her father, a factory worker, receives a call from the police telling him she is in hospital. The film follows her parents, Dong-hoon and Mi-hee, who runs a stationery shop beneath the family home, as they try to help their eight-year-old daughter recover while struggling with their own anger and grief. So-won's name means "wish," and a wish she makes becomes the starting point for the family's slow attempt to rebuild.

Lee Joon-ik directed the film, working from a screenplay by Jo Joong-hoon and Kim Ji-hye, with Byun Bong-hyun and Seong Chang-yeon producing. It was released in October 2013, placing it between Battlefield Heroes and The Throne in the director's filmography. Sul Kyung-gu and Uhm Ji-won play the parents, Lee Re plays So-won, and Kim Sang-ho, Kim Hae-sook and Ra Mi-ran appear in supporting roles among a credited cast of 26.

The film runs 122 minutes and took about 16 million dollars worldwide. Audience response has been strong and consistent: on IMDb it holds 8.2 out of 10 from roughly 12,000 votes, and on TMDB 8.4 out of 10 from around 900 votes.
