Danny Collins
Short description
Danny Collins is an aging rock star who has spent decades living the hard-partying life his fame made possible. When his manager discovers a letter written to him by John Lennon more than forty years earlier that he never saw, the encounter with that missed message pushes him to reconsider how he has lived. He sets out to make amends with the grown son he has never met and to build a relationship with the son's family, a change that does not come easily to the people he is trying to reach.
Dan Fogelman directed and wrote the film, his first time directing a feature after establishing himself as a screenwriter; his second film as director followed three years later. Al Pacino leads the cast as Danny, with Annette Bening, Christopher Plummer, Jennifer Garner, Bobby Cannavale and Nick Offerman in supporting roles. The production, made for ten million dollars, recouped slightly more than that worldwide.
Critics rated the film 6.4 out of 10 across 134 reviews, while audiences on TMDB have given it 6.7 out of 10 from 597 votes, a modest gap between the two.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, Julianne Moore and Jeremy Renner were supposed to star in the film, but after funding issues, Annette Bening and Bobby Cannavale replaced them.
- Until 2011, the film was being developed by Warner Bros., and Steve Carell was considered for the lead role.
