Tulip Fever

Set in seventeenth-century Amsterdam, Tulip Fever centres on Jan van Loos, a painter hired by the wealthy merchant Cornelis Sandvoort to paint a portrait of his young wife, Sophia. As the sittings go on, Jan and Sophia develop feelings for each other, and the affair draws in Sophia's maid, Maria. With the city in the grip of tulip speculation, the pair put their hopes of a future together into the bulb trade, gambling on a market where a single bulb can be worth more than most people earn in years.

Justin Chadwick directed, working from a screenplay by Tom Stoppard and Deborah Moggach, whose novel is the source. It followed his earlier films The Other Boleyn Girl and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and came before Brothers Under Fire in 2026. Alicia Vikander and Dane DeHaan play Sophia and Jan, with Christoph Waltz as Cornelis, Judi Dench as the Abbess of St. Ursula, and Holliday Grainger as Maria.

The film was released in July 2017 and runs 107 minutes. Made for a reported 25 million USD, it took about 9 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 6.5 rating from 747 votes, against a critics' rating of 4.4 out of 10 from 61 reviews, so audiences rated it noticeably higher than reviewers did.
