Short description

Mr. Jones is a drama about a man whose life is shaped by severe manic depression. During his highs he is energetic, charming and impulsive, while his lows pull him toward despair and self-destructive behaviour. After an episode lands him in a psychiatric hospital, he comes under the care of Dr. Elizabeth Bowen, who becomes more personally involved in his treatment than her professional role allows.

The film was directed by Mike Figgis, arriving between Internal Affairs and Leaving Las Vegas in a career that also includes Stormy Monday, Timecode and Cold Creek Manor. Eric Roth and Michael Cristofer wrote the screenplay, and Richard Gere, who also produced, plays the title character opposite Lena Olin as Dr. Bowen. Anne Bancroft, Tom Irwin, Delroy Lindo and Bruce Altman appear in supporting roles. The production was released by TriStar Pictures.

Mr. Jones took about 8 million dollars worldwide, a modest return for a studio release with a well-known lead. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.2 out of 10 from 14 critic reviews, alongside a TMDB audience rating of 5.8 from 182 votes, indicating that viewers rated it somewhat more favourably than critics did. The film runs 114 minutes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In preparation for filming, Richard Gere, director Mike Figgis, and screenwriter Eric Roth studied manic-depressive psychosis (now known as bipolar disorder) extensively and thoroughly. As part of his preparation for the role, Gere even met with people suffering from this mental illness.
  • Michelle Pfeiffer turned down the lead female role to participate in filming "Batman Returns" (1992) as Catwoman.
