Marc Schaudel and his wife Claire need someone to look after their young son Remy for the weekend, so Marc leaves the boy with Franck, an employee he considers reliable. What Marc does not take into account is that Franck turns thirty that same weekend, that Remy is a demanding child, and that Franck's friends have plans to celebrate. The next morning the couple is woken by a call from the police: both Franck and Remy have vanished, and the house has been wrecked. Among the damage, officers recover a camera holding footage of the previous night, and by watching it Marc and Claire piece together what happened.
Babysitting is a French comedy released in 2014, directed by Nicolas Benamou and Philippe Lacheau, who also stars as Franck. The two share directing credit here, and it stands as the earliest entry in each of their directing careers, preceding the sequel Babysitting 2 a year later. The screenplay is by Tarek Boudali, Lacheau and Julien Arruti, who also appear on screen as Franck's friends, alongside Alice David, Vincent Desagnat and Grégoire Ludig.
Made for around three million dollars, the film earned roughly twenty million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. Audiences rate it 6.8 out of 10 on IMDb from about thirteen thousand votes and the same 6.8 on TMDB from roughly two thousand votes, a consistent reception across both.
