Prefontaine
Short description
Prefontaine is a biographical drama about Steve Prefontaine, the American distance runner from Coos Bay, Oregon, who set records in the early 1970s and competed at the Munich Olympics. Confident and outspoken, he clashed with authority and pushed himself past the limits others accepted, becoming a favourite of track crowds. The film follows his rise, his rivalry and his setbacks on the way to the top, and the price of his ambition.
Steve James directed, working from a screenplay he wrote with Eugene Corr, two years after his documentary Hoop Dreams. Jared Leto plays Prefontaine, with R. Lee Ermey as coach Bill Bowerman, Ed O'Neill as Bill Dellinger, Breckin Meyer as Pat Tyson, Lindsay Crouse as Elfriede Prefontaine and Amy Locane as Nancy Alleman. It was made for about 8 million dollars.
On IMDb the film holds 6.8 out of 10 from around 8,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.6 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes, while critics' reviews average 6.1 out of 10. It runs 106 minutes and mixes drama with romance. Steve James went on to direct Head Games and Life Itself.

- Most of the film was shot in Washington State, but some episodes were filmed in Oregon, where Steve Prefontaine (1951-1975) was born and raised.
- In fact, Steve Prefontaine (1951-1975) tried his hand at both basketball and football, but was not accepted onto the respective teams in high school due to his short stature. After that, he decided to try his luck in cross-country running and, when he was accepted onto the school team, fell in love with the track.
