Mommy

Xavier Dolan wrote and directed Mommy, a Canadian drama about Diane "Die" Després, a widow who brings her teenage son Steve home from a care facility and tries to build a new life for the two of them. Steve's unpredictable outbursts of violence repeatedly unsettle the household, and the fragile balance between mother and son is further tested by the demands of daily life. Their reserved, stuttering neighbour Kyla gradually becomes involved in their home, offering Diane the support she has been missing and giving all three a period of relative calm.

Dolan also produced the film with Nancy Grant. Anne Dorval plays Diane, Suzanne Clément plays Kyla, and Antoine Olivier Pilon plays Steve, with Patrick Huard and Alexandre Goyette among the credited cast of 35. The film runs 138 minutes and was made for about 5 million US dollars, going on to earn roughly 13 million worldwide.

Mommy was released in 2014, the fourth film Dolan directed, following I Killed My Mother, Heartbeats and Laurence Anyways, and preceding Tom at the Farm. It holds a rating of 8 out of 10 on IMDb from around 65,000 votes and 8.2 out of 10 on TMDB from about 2,900 votes, while a film critics' rating stands at 8 out of 10 from 128 reviews, placing audience and critical responses closely together.
