A fourteen-year-old girl named Hayley Stark meets a thirty-two-year-old fashion photographer, Jeff Kohlver, after the two have been chatting online. They arrange to meet in a coffee shop, where Jeff is charmed by how bright and self-assured she is. She agrees to go back to his apartment with him, and he takes her there intending to shoot photographs of her. Once inside, the encounter turns against Jeff, who finds himself at Hayley's mercy as she questions him about a girl named Donna Mauer and about what has happened to the young teenagers who came to his home before.
Hard Candy was directed by David Slade, from a screenplay by Brian Nelson. It is the first of the five features credited to Slade in chronological order, ahead of 30 Days of Night, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and Dark Harvest, and it was produced by Michael Caldwell, David Higgins and Richard Hutton for Vulcan Productions. Elliot Page plays Hayley and Patrick Wilson plays Jeff, with Sandra Oh, Odessa Rae, G.J. Echternkamp and Cori Bright in supporting roles. Made for around one million dollars, the film took about seven million worldwide. Its audience scores sit close together, at 7 out of 10 on IMDb and 6.8 out of 10 on TMDB, while a critics' rating of 6.7 out of 10 places the reviews roughly in line with those viewer responses.
