A policewoman named Yeong-nam is transferred from Seoul to a small coastal village after a scandal at her previous post. In the quiet community, she becomes involved in the life of Do-hee, a reserved teenage girl who is mistreated at home and resented by other children in the village. Yeong-nam intervenes on the girl's behalf, and the relationship between the two develops as she tries to protect Do-hee from the violence around her, while the village's customs, prejudices and concealed tensions shape how the situation unfolds.
The 2014 Korean drama was written and directed by July Jung, her first feature film; it was followed by Next Sohee in 2022 and Dora in 2026. Lee Chang-dong produced. Bae Doona plays Yeong-nam, with Kim Sae-ron as Do-hee, Song Sae-byuk as Yong-ha, Kim Jin-goo as Jeom-soon, Son Jong-hak as Chief Eom and Na Jong-min as Cop Kim.
On IMDb it holds 6.9 out of 10 from around 3,500 votes, and on TMDB the rating is also 6.9, from roughly 190 votes. A critics' rating of 7.6 from 27 reviews places the film somewhat higher with reviewers than with the general audience, a pattern that suggests the film was better received critically than its modest vote counts would indicate.
