Troll 2
Short description
Troll 2 follows the Waits family, who arrange a home exchange and travel to the small rural town of Nilbog for a vacation. The son, Joshua, is troubled by warnings from the spirit of his recently deceased grandfather, who tells him the town's inhabitants are not what they appear to be. His parents dismiss his fears, but the family soon finds that their friendly neighbors have sinister intentions toward their guests. The film is a fantasy horror production from Italy and the United States, directed by Claudio Fragasso from a screenplay he wrote with Rossella Drudi.
Fragasso's career as a director began with Rats: Night of Terror in 1984 and continued through Strike Commando 2 in 1988. Troll 2 was released in 1990, the same year as After Death, and his filmmaking resumed decades later with The Demon Among Us in 2026. The cast is led by Michael Stephenson as Joshua, with George Hardy and Margo Prey as his parents, Connie Young as his sister Holly, Robert Ormsby as Grandpa Seth and Deborah Reed as Creedence Leonore Gielgud.
The film was released in October 1990 and runs 95 minutes. Its reception has been poor across every measure: a critics' rating of 2.9 out of 10 from 24 reviews, an IMDb score of 3 out of 10 from roughly 36,000 votes, and a TMDB rating of 3.9 out of 10 from several hundred votes. Audience and critical assessments therefore sit at a similarly low level.
What's left behind the scenes
- Director Claudio Fragasso and his wife Rossella Drudi, who only spoke Italian, wrote the script in very poor English. On set, the actors wanted to improvise to improve their lines, but Fragasso forbade it, saying that all dialogue had to be read exactly as written in the script.
- The entire cast came to the film's audition hoping to play supporting roles, but after the screening, they were offered the lead roles.
- Despite the misleading title, trolls do not appear in the film.
- The film was originally titled "Goblins", but distributors in the US anticipated it would not be successful as a standalone project, so they insisted on the title "Troll 2" to capitalize on the minor success of the film "Troll", to which this film has no relation.
- In 2007, a festival was held in Morgan, Utah, where the film "Troll 2" was shot. The city was transformed into the fictional town of Nilbog, which was shown in the film. The mayor of Morgan presented director Claudio Fragasso with a symbolic key to the city.
