Set in Montreal, Afterglow follows two marriages that run into trouble when their paths cross. Lucky Mann is a contractor whose repair work comes easily to him, and whose charm has made him popular with women. His wife Phyllis, a former actress, has grown distant from him. Marianne Byron is the younger wife of Jeffrey, a driven businessman focused on his own success; she is unhappy in the marriage and longs for a child. When Marianne hires Lucky to work on her home, an affair begins, and the situation grows more complicated once Jeffrey enters the picture and takes an interest in Phyllis, drawing both couples into a tangle of crossed desires.
Alan Rudolph directed and wrote the film, with Robert Altman producing. It sits between Mortal Thoughts and Breakfast of Champions in Rudolph's filmography. Nick Nolte and Julie Christie lead the cast as Lucky and Phyllis, alongside Lara Flynn Boyle and Jonny Lee Miller as the Byrons.
Released in late December 1997, the film is a romantic comedy-drama with a small footprint. It earned about 2 million dollars worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb, viewers rate it 6 out of 10 from 4,100 votes, while on TMDB it holds 5.9 out of 10 from 42 votes. A critics' rating of 6.8 out of 10 from 31 reviews places professional assessment somewhat above the audience scores. The 31-strong credited cast supports an intimate, character-driven production.
