Suite Française

In 1940, as German forces occupy France, Lucile Angellier lives in a small town with her controlling mother-in-law, waiting for word of her husband, who is a prisoner of war. Parisian refugees arrive, followed by German soldiers who are housed in the villagers' homes. The Angelliers are required to take in Bruno von Falk, a refined German officer. Lucile at first keeps her distance from him, but the two are drawn together by a shared love of music, since she plays the piano and he was a composer. Their growing attachment unfolds against the upheaval of the occupation.

Saul Dibb directed and co-wrote the film with Matt Charman. It is his second feature, following The Duchess (2008) and preceding Journey's End (2017). Michelle Williams plays Lucile, with Kristin Scott Thomas as Madame Angellier and Matthias Schoenaerts as Bruno von Falk; Sam Riley, Ruth Wilson and Heino Ferch appear in supporting roles.

The production, made in Belgium, Canada and France, had a budget of about 15 million dollars and took roughly 9 million dollars worldwide. Audience response has been generally favourable: on IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from around 30,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.2 out of 10 from over a thousand votes. A critics' rating of 5.9 out of 10 from 44 reviews is lower than those audience scores.
