A skeptical journalist named John Baxter buys the notorious Amityville house, which has stood unsold for years, at a very low price. He intends to prove that its haunted reputation is nothing but myth, settle in, and write his first novel, with his daughter and those close to him sharing the home. Before long, strange events begin affecting his colleagues and relatives who visit, and he calls in a team of paranormal investigators to find a rational explanation. The film is a horror thriller from the United States, released in 1983, and it is the third entry in the Amityville series.
Richard Fleischer directed; it is the twenty-first of his twenty-three films in chronological order, arriving after Ashanti (1979) and before Conan the Destroyer (1984). David Ambrose wrote the screenplay, and Dino De Laurentiis and Stephen F. Kesten produced. Tony Roberts leads as John Baxter, alongside Tess Harper, Robert Joy, Candy Clark, Leora Dana and John Beal.
Given a budget of around six million dollars, the film's worldwide box office matched that figure, so it did not recover its costs on theatrical receipts alone. On IMDb it holds a rating of 4.2 from about 8,300 votes, and on TMDB 4.6 from 258 votes, while a film critics' rating of 3.6 from 22 reviews places reviewers slightly below the general audience.
