Christmas Evil

Christmas Evil follows Harry Stadling, a toy factory employee in a snowy New Jersey suburb whose fixation on Christmas and Santa Claus runs far deeper than ordinary holiday enthusiasm. A disturbing childhood encounter tied to the season left its mark on him, and as an adult he keeps close watch on the children around him, sorting them into mental lists of those he judges good and bad. His coworkers, including his brother Philip and the people at the factory where he makes Christmas toys, take him for an oddity. When the holiday approaches, Harry's belief that he is Santa Claus takes on a violent form, and he sets out to make those he considers unworthy answer for their behavior.

Lewis Jackson wrote and directed this 1980 American horror and thriller, produced by Pete Kameron and Burt Kleiner for Pressman Film, Troma Entertainment and Cinevid Productions. Brandon Maggart plays Harry, heading a credited cast of 64 that also includes Jeffrey DeMunn, Dianne Hull, Andy Fenwick, Brian Neville and Joe Jamrog. Running 94 minutes, the film has drawn modest audience scores: 5.6 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 9,900 votes, and 5.5 out of 10 on TMDB from about 205 votes. The wide gap in vote counts reflects a film with a small but persistent following rather than broad viewership, and its middling averages suggest viewers find it uneven, though it remains a recognizable entry in the holiday-themed horror that followed the success of John Carpenter's Halloween.
