Silver Lode

Silver Lode is a 1954 Western set in a small Kansas town on the Fourth of July. Dan Ballard is preparing to marry Rose Evans when four armed men arrive and interrupt the ceremony. Their leader, Ned McCarty, identifies himself as a federal marshal and arrests Ballard on charges of murder and stealing twenty thousand dollars. Ballard insists he is innocent and asks for time to produce evidence, but McCarty's presence and the rumors he spreads steadily turn the townspeople against the man they once respected. Only Rose and a few others stand by him as the community's mood shifts from support to hostility.

The film was directed by Allan Dwan and written by Karen DeWolf, with Benedict Bogeaus producing for RKO Radio Pictures. It came at a point when Dwan had been directing features since the silent era, spanning titles such as Robin Hood and Sands of Iwo Jima, and it preceded his later film Slightly Scarlet. John Payne plays Ballard, Lizabeth Scott plays Rose, and Dan Duryea plays McCarty, with supporting turns from Dolores Moran, Emile Meyer and Robert Warwick.

Running eighty-one minutes, Silver Lode holds a rating of 6.8 on IMDb from around two thousand six hundred votes, and 6.2 on TMDB from a much smaller sample of seventy-one. The narrower TMDB figure reflects far fewer viewers, while the larger IMDb tally indicates a modest but settled audience for the film over the decades.
