Ricki and the Flash
Short description
Ricki Rendazzo spent years chasing a career as a rock musician, leaving her husband Pete and their children behind. Her ambitions never fully paid off: she plays in a bar band at night and works a cashier job during the day. When Pete calls to tell her that their grown daughter Julie is struggling and needs her, Ricki travels from California to Indiana to see the family she barely knows. The reunion is strained, and Ricki has to reckon with the damage her absence caused while trying to find a way back into her children's lives.
Jonathan Demme directed the film, the fourteenth of fourteen features he made in chronological order, following Rachel Getting Married in 2008. Diablo Cody wrote the screenplay, and Marc Platt, Gary Goetzman and Cody produced. Meryl Streep leads as Ricki, with Kevin Kline as Pete, Mamie Gummer as Julie, Sebastian Stan as Joshua, Audra McDonald as Maureen and Ben Platt as Daniel, among a credited cast of 78.
The film blends comedy, drama and music, and its performances centre on Ricki's bar-band numbers. Made for about 18 million dollars, it took roughly 41 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from around 26,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.8 out of 10 from 748 votes. A critics' score of 6 out of 10 from 198 reviews places it close to the audience ratings, with neither group markedly more enthusiastic than the other.
