Short description
Salt is a 2010 American action thriller directed by Phillip Noyce from a screenplay by Kurt Wimmer. Angelina Jolie plays Evelyn Salt, a veteran CIA officer whose record and loyalty have never been in question. That changes when a Russian defector, Oleg Vasilyevich Orlov, names her as a sleeper agent planted in the United States. Rather than submit to interrogation, Salt goes on the run, relying on her training and tradecraft to stay ahead of the agency hunting her, including colleagues Theodore Winter and Darryl Peabody, while trying to reach her husband, Mike Krause. Her attempts to clear her name keep deepening the suspicion around her, and the central question of who she really is stays open.
The film was released in July 2010 and runs 100 minutes. It was made for about 110 million dollars and earned roughly 293 million worldwide, a solid return for an original spy thriller carried largely by Jolie's name. Reception was middling rather than rapturous: it holds 6.5 out of 10 on IMDb across some 342,000 votes, 6.4 out of 10 on TMDB from far fewer votes, and a critics' rating of 6 out of 10 drawn from 250 reviews, so audiences and critics landed in much the same place.
Salt sits twelfth among the sixteen features Noyce has directed, arriving after Catch a Fire and before The Giver. Wimmer wrote the script, with Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Sunil Perkash producing and a credited cast of 74.
What's left behind the scenes
- Tom Cruise was originally slated to star in the film, but he was replaced by Jolie. The script was then rewritten.
- During the story of Evelyn Salt's childhood and her upbringing in a special school located on the grounds of an old monastery, the film shows the Zeltovodsky Makariev Monastery, situated on the banks of the Volga River in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
- Three alternate versions for Blu-ray and DVD include a number of plot changes. The overall length of the film is increased by four minutes. There are more flashbacks, and scenes of violence are more pronounced. The ending of the film is also changed. While in the bunker, Winter kills the President of the United States along with everyone else, and in the final scene, the media reports that the new President of the United States, Joseph Steven, has announced that with Salt's death, the terrorist group she was involved with has been completely destroyed. The President made this announcement during a peace visit to Moscow, where he laid flowers at the site of the plane crash in which his parents and sister died during a visit to Russia in 1974. The final words of the film are a hint that the new President of the United States is one of those who was trained by Orlov as a child. In the extended version of the film, the length is increased by another minute. In the finale, Salt arrives in Russia, where she kills Orlov (the scene of his death on a barge is absent in this version) and destroys the camp where children were trained for future espionage.
- At the beginning of the film, Salt, while fleeing from a pursuit in the CIA building, drops her shoes on one of the staircases, which fall almost on top of each other. In the next shot, when she is being monitored on screens, the shoes are at least half a meter apart.
