Bastian has a new stepsister, Nicole, and a new school where a gang of bullies led by Slip immediately targets him. When they chase him into the school library, he hides inside and wishes himself into Fantasia, leaving behind the magic book that serves as the gateway between the two worlds. Slip gets hold of it and discovers he can use its power to shape Fantasia to his own destructive ends. The Childlike Empress turns to Bastian, who sets out with the luckdragon Falkor and other companions from the fantasy realm to take the book back and stop the bullies from ruining Fantasia for good.
The film is a German-American production directed by Peter MacDonald, whose earlier theatrical features were Rambo III and Mo' Money; it was followed in his filmography by Legionnaire. Jeff Lieberman wrote the screenplay, Dieter Geissler and others produced, and the cast includes Jason James Richter as Bastian, Melody Kay as Nicole, Jack Black as Slip, Ryan Bollman, Freddie Jones and Julie Cox, among 42 credited performers. It is 95 minutes long and cost about 17 million dollars.
Audience response has been weak. On IMDb the film holds a rating of 3.2 from roughly 13,000 votes, and on TMDB it scores 4.5 from about 440 votes, figures that place it well below the earlier entries in the series for most viewers.
