Short description
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot follows Kim Barker, a television journalist who trades her desk job in New York for a reporting assignment in Afghanistan. Arriving in a country and culture far removed from her own, she sets out to cover the war while adjusting to life on the ground. Among those who help her find her footing are Tanya Vanderpoel, a more seasoned and daring correspondent, a no-nonsense military officer, and a photojournalist whose easy charm masks his own experience of the region. The film is based on Barker's memoir about her years reporting in Afghanistan and Pakistan after arriving there in 2002.
Directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa from a screenplay by Robert Carlock, the film was their fourth feature together, following I Love You Phillip Morris, Crazy, Stupid, Love. and Focus. Tina Fey, who also produced alongside Ian Bryce and Lorne Michaels, leads the cast as Kim Barker, with Margot Robbie, Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Freeman, Josh Charles and Alfred Molina in supporting roles.
Released in March 2016, the film had a budget of about 35 million dollars and took in roughly 48 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.6 from nearly 55,000 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 6.3 from just over a thousand votes, closely matching the critics' rating of 6.3 from 211 reviews.
