A young Polish captain takes his first command aboard a rusting cargo ship in the South China Sea. His Chinese crew, already distrustful, come to suspect that he and the ship's unscrupulous owner intend to sink the vessel to collect the insurance. The crew abandon the ship, leaving the captain alone and powerless at anchor in a bay. During a restless night on deck he spots a body drifting in the water, caught in a rope ladder. He pulls the ladder in and finds a Chinese woman, who comes aboard with only the words "Hide me." By daybreak a search party arrives, hunting for a killer.
