Short description
A Little Chaos is set in the seventeenth century at the court of King Louis XIV, where Sabine De Barra, a landscape gardener, is chosen by the royal gardener André Le Nôtre to work on the gardens of Versailles. Hired to build an outdoor ballroom among the palace grounds, she joins a project the king wants finished quickly and made more extravagant than anything seen before. Her position brings her into the rivalries and intrigues of the court, and a bond grows between her and Le Nôtre, who is married, while a tragedy in her past weighs on her.
The film was directed by Alan Rickman, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Jeremy Brock and Alison Deegan and appears as Louis XIV. Kate Winslet plays Sabine, with Matthias Schoenaerts as Le Nôtre; the cast also includes Stanley Tucci, Helen McCrory and Steven Waddington, among 52 credited performers. Rickman had directed one earlier feature before this one, which was released in 2015 and runs 117 minutes.
Made by a British and American production team, the film took about 10 million dollars worldwide, a modest return for a period drama. On IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from around 27,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.3 out of 10 from roughly 700 votes. A critics' rating of 5.4 out of 10 from 91 reviews places it below the audience scores.
