Galveston follows Roy Cady, a small-time criminal in New Orleans whose life is upended when he learns he is seriously ill. His boss, Stan Ptitko, sets him up in a violent ambush, and Roy barely escapes with his life. On his way out he crosses paths with Rocky, a very young woman working as a prostitute, and makes an impulsive decision to bring her along as he heads toward Galveston, Texas. What begins as a flight from his former employers turns into a journey in which the two, both carrying damaged pasts, must rely on each other while the people pursuing them close in.
The film is directed by Mélanie Laurent, working from a screenplay by Nic Pizzolatto. It sits second in her directing career, between Breathe and The Mad Women's Ball. Ben Foster plays Roy, with Elle Fanning as Rocky, Beau Bridges as Stan Ptitko, and supporting turns from Lili Reinhart, Adepero Oduye and Robert Aramayo among a credited cast of 28. The production companies behind it include Low Spark Films, Jean Doumanian Productions and RLJE Films.
Released in October 2018 and running 91 minutes, Galveston drew modest audience scores, with 6.2/10 on IMDb from nearly 16,000 votes and 6.1/10 on TMDB from a few hundred. A critics' rating of 6.3/10 from 53 reviews places critical and audience responses closely in line with one another.
