Hell Night follows four college students who must spend a night inside Garth Manor as part of their initiation into the Alpha Sigma Rho fraternity. The mansion has stood empty since the night, twelve years earlier, when its owner killed his family before taking his own life, and legend holds that one member of the household survived and may still be hiding somewhere inside. The fraternity's other members plan to frighten the pledges with staged scares, but the evening takes a darker turn when the deaths in the house become real.
Tom DeSimone directed the film, which was written by Randy Feldman and produced by Mark L. Rosen, Irwin Yablans and Bruce Cohn Curtis. It opened in August 1981 and runs just over an hour and a half. Linda Blair leads the cast as Marti Gaines, alongside Vincent Van Patten, Peter Barton, Suki Goodwin, Kevin Brophy and Jenny Neumann. Released between DeSimone's Chatterbox! and The Concrete Jungle, it is the second of the three films he directed in that period.
Audience response has been moderate. On IMDb the film holds a rating of 5.6 out of 10 from roughly 9,800 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.5 out of 10 from around 200 votes. A small pool of critics rated it 5 out of 10 across 14 reviews, a mixed verdict that places it close to the audience scores rather than far above or below them.
