Gabe and Judy Roth are caught off guard when their closest friends, Jack and Sally, announce over dinner that they intend to separate. The news unsettles the older couple, who begin to examine the foundations of their own long marriage. As Jack and Sally try to rebuild their lives with other people, Gabe, a professor, drifts toward a flirtation with one of his students, while Judy finds herself drawn to a man Sally has introduced into their circle.

Woody Allen directed and wrote the screenplay, with Robert Greenhut producing.
